Crete, Jindra Cemetery

Crete, Jindra Cemetery

While photographing in the Big Blue Cemetery, Narodni Hrbitov, the day after Memorial Day, I spoke to a woman who was visiting her family graves. She asked me if I had seen the Jindra cemetery. I told her I knew about it but had not been able to find it. She gave me good directions and also told me it was possible to witch hundreds of unmarked graves of children in the fields. I finally found it, south of Crete, almost totally unmarked except for two red brick columns, which must have once supported the metal arched gate, near the county road. There are only about 100 grave stones surrounded by acres of flower-filled fields. The Jindra cemetery was the first Czech cemetery in Nebraska, although it did not remain wholly Czech. Many of the children died in a diphtheria epidemic. Witching or dowsing is done with two lengths of wire held parallel to each other in front of a person. A wire coat hanger can be used, cut to about two feet long and bent at the ends to form a handle. Not everyone can do it, but if you are blessed the wires will swing as you walk. It is said they will move together and cross over the grave of a male and move apart over the grave of a female. Once you pass over the grave, the wires return to normal. The length of the grave will tell you the approximate age of the person buried there.
