Plasi, Angels

Plasi, Angels

Plasi crucifixion statuary at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church cemetery, located south of Prague, just off Highway 79. Driving west, you come to the cemetery first then go past it to the top of the hill. The church building rests on the site of the town of Plasi which died out when it was bypassed by the railroad a hundred years ago. The town was originally called Plzen, the name of the town in Bohemia the settlers had come from. It was changed to Plasi because Plzen interfered with mail delivery. The name was too much like Pilger in Stanton county. Early cemetery records were lost in a fire in 1901. The oldest gravestone was made for Katerina Popova, who died March 2, 1872. The cemetery is laid out on the east side of the hill, with a stone grotto at the top. The crucifix and angels face the south watching over the gate. It is a steep climb to the top of the hill, but the stones and crosses spread out beneath your feet are worth it.
