Weston, St, John of Nepomuk Catholic Church

Weston, St, John of Nepomuk Catholic Church

The first Mass in Weston was said in 1879 in Frantisek Fajman's harness shop for eighteen Czech families. A small church was built in 1885 but by 1901 it was too small. It wasn't until 1906 that this brick and stone structure was dedicated. It was built for $20,000. The church was renovated in 1947, when stained glass windows were installed in memory of all who served in the armed forces. In 1954, St. John's Catholic school was built. Near Weston on Highway 92, the Starlight Ballroom is the legendary gathering place for bands like the Czechlanders, Allen Valish and his Orchestra, the Adolph Nemetz Czech Polka Orchestra, and the Kostka Brothers Polka Band. Dale Matousek of the Czech Friends Polka Band says his mission is to keep the big band Bohemian polka sound alive. He believes it is necessary to save ballrooms like the Starlite as a means of public preservation, the way museums save culture. Czech music is living history and culture. Charter busloads of people come from all over Nebraska and as far as Kansas City. Built in 1964, the Starlight has a 5,000 square foot wooden dance floor.
