Flag Mural, Wilber

Flag Mural, Wilber

This mural has been painted to be seen as you enter Wilber from the south. Bohemian Freethinkers were ideally suited to the United States, where freedom was encouraged and expected. This mural shows how the old world and new world combined in the minds of the immigrants. The Creed of the Freethinkers from The Voice of the Freethinkers' Union, Iowa City; June, 1872: “Freethinkers believe that all things are related though natural law and that the most complex and most perfect is the human being. “Man's highest emanation is his spirit, his mind and will, which is called 'I.' But man by himself is powerless and incomplete, so individuals are called upon to combine their minds and wills into higher entities: small communities, then into larger ones, and finally into a unity of all mankind, called the Great Mankind, which should be the only Lord on earth. “The earth is but one member of the solar system which is but one part of the universe. The greatness of the universe is harmony, the law of the universe is cognitive truth. “The devotion of one member of the universe is love, its conscious exercise is justice, the process of learning about the laws of the universe is science, and the imitation of universal harmony is art.”
