Prague, Monsignor William Rezabek Parish Hall

Prague, Monsignor William Rezabek Parish Hall

Prague is located in the “Bohemian Alps” in western Saunders county. The town was established in the spring of 1887 when the Lincoln Land company platted the town as a station along the Ashland-Schuyler railroad branch line. The first business in town was a saloon that opened in September. The post office was established in December of the same year. Residents wanted to name it Praha, after the capital of Czechoslovakia, but that was already the name of a town in Colfax county, so they used the English translation, Prague, instead. This photograph is the parish hall of St. John's Catholic Church. Monsignor William Rezabek was appointed pastor of St. John's in 1950. The parish hall was built in 1950, just in time for the celebration of the Church's golden jubilee in 1951. In 1941 the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy abandoned the line from Prague to Schuyler. After that Prague's population dropped from a high of 420 in the thirties to 346 in 2000. In 1987, Prague celebrated its centennial by baking the world's largest cherry kolache, over 14 feet in diameter.
