Crete, Squaw Creek

Crete, Squaw Creek

Early Czech immigrants found work in the meatpacking industry, the smelting industry and the Union Pacific Railroad shops in Omaha. By the time most Czechs arrived in Nebraska, all the land available through the Homestead Act in 1862 had been claimed. Much of the remaining land was owned by the railroads and the state and was sold at the highest price possible. At the height of the Czech immigration in the 1880s, a prospective farmer had to have between $400 and $1,000 to get started.
